Protecting coasts. Empowering communities. Sustaining islands.

Fieldwork
Healthy coasts sustain communities.
Bakau Institute is a coastal conservation organisation working at the meeting point of ecosystem protection, knowledge, community livelihoods, and sustainable island futures. We believe coasts stay resilient only when the people who live on them are equipped to steward them.
Four focus areas, one coastline.
Our work connects ecology, livelihoods, knowledge, and policy — because no single lens is enough for places where tide, forest, and community meet.
Coastal & Mangrove Conservation
Protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems that buffer coastlines, store carbon, and shelter marine nurseries.
Sustainable Coastal Resources
Working with fishers and stewards on governance, harvest, and stewardship of shared coastal resources.
Community & Livelihoods
Building local economies around conservation — from coastal literacy to sustainable marine enterprise.
Research & Education
Producing field knowledge and learning spaces that turn local experience into shared evidence.

Juru Seberang
Building a coastal economy around conservation.
Juru Seberang is where our approach takes shape on the ground — a working coastal community building livelihoods around the health of its own mangroves, fisheries, and learning spaces.

01
Understand
Listen to the place — ecology, community, history, and tide.
02Protect
Secure what is still intact before any restoration begins.
03Empower
Equip local stewards with knowledge, tools, and authority.
04Create Value
Build livelihoods that depend on a healthy coast, not on its extraction.
05Collaborate
Share what works with government, partners, and neighbouring communities.
Anchored in Belitung.
Belitung is our current geographic anchor — an island ecosystem where mangrove forest, small fisheries, and coastal communities meet. From here we build field evidence we can scale through partners.

Field Note
Conservation works through collaboration.
Government, corporate, NGO, academic, and community partners each bring a piece that the others cannot. We work openly, and we work to share credit rather than claim it.
